The route was secured with the help of measures in Budget 2020 to fund regional airport development.
Andrew Murphy Managing Director Shannon Airport said "This is very positive news for Shannon as not alone do we get a scheduled service to one of Europe’s most visited cities and a strong inbound market for tourists to Ireland, but we are also getting a new carrier on the runway here as well. We have been working closely with Lauda and their parent Ryanair, to deliver this service and are looking forward to the airline commencing operation in the New Year."
Laudamotion CEO Andreas Gruber said “Lauda is pleased to launch a new Shannon route to Vienna, commencing in March, which will operate twice weekly as part of our summer 2020 schedule. Customers in Shannon can now book flights to Vienna as far out as October 2020 flying on the lowest fares and with the greenest/cleanest airline group in Europe, with the lowest CO2 emissions.”
Niall Gibbons CEO Tourism Ireland said "The announcement is good news for tourism to the west coast of Ireland – expanding the options for Austrian holidaymakers to come and experience the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way. We look forward to co-operating with Lauda, Shannon Airport and other tourism partners, to maximise the promotion of inbound travel on this new service.”
Malta Air currently operates a fleet of 48 Boeing 737-800 aircraft transferred from parent Ryanair DAC with the six (10 in Summer 2021) aircraft based in Malta to re-branded in Malta Air colours and move Ryanair based aircraft from France, Italy and Germany onto the Malta AOC. In Summer 2020 Malta Air will base four Boeing 737-800 in Vienna airport to operate on behalf of Laudamotion.
